Polar Plunge

15th Annual:  The 15th Annual Polar Plunge was held on February 3, 2007 at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.  Area 11 raised close to $11,000 this year for Special Olympics.  75 percent will return to our local Area 11 and the remainder will go to the state Special Olympics.  Over 3,000 plungers jumped into the freezing water in the name of Special Olympics.

National Games

2006:  Local Special Olympians Strike Gold at the 2006 National Games Area 11 athletes brought home several gold medals at the 2006 U.S. Special Olympics National Games in Ames, Iowa. Relive the excitement with Farmers' Almanac TV.

Swimmer Grace Ann Braxton of Fredericksburg won the Division 4 200-meter backstroke (3:46.04) and finished second in the Division F5 100-meter individual medley (1:53.38). She also competed for Virginia's team in the 400 medley relay.

Golfer Ionela Warren of Spotsylvania County won the gold medal in the Level 1, Division 2 Individual Skills competition. She finished with 127 points in a three-day event that included drives, iron shots, pitching and short and long putts.

Power lifter Gloria Jeffries of Mechanicsville swept first place in all the Division B2 categories: bench press (50 kilograms), squat (90 kilograms), dead lift (122.5) and total lift (262.5). Her coach is Spotsylvania resident Mike Canaday.

The Riverbend Grizzlies finished third in the Division A team basketball competition. The Grizzlies lost their opener to Utah (27-18), then rebounded by defeating Northern California (34-29) before losing yesterday to Southern California (42-9).  Members of the Grizzies include Ramona Auclair, Thomas Brent, Margaret Elswick, Shawnthe Faucet, Kristi Long, Melinda Prather, Caitlin Rapp, Darnell Sedgewick, and Samantha Sheehan.

World Games

The first Special Olympics World Games were held in Chicago, Illinois, USA in July 1968, the event has grown to become one of the world's leading athletic events. Every two years, thousands of Special Olympics athletes from around the world come together to showcase their athletic skills and celebrate the spirit of Special Olympics.  

Alternating between Summer and Winter Games, the Special Olympics World Games is a world-class sporting event featuring intense competition and inspiring performances by the great athletes of Special Olympics.

Opening Ceremonies was a spectacular event, capturing the culture of China and the spirit of harmony around the world. More than 55,000 people and 7,300 athletes attended.

Team Virginia brings home gold, silver and bronze from China!
